The Beatles in Love

Can true love survive the temptations of rock 'n' roll? Apparently it can, at least for Beatles' superstars John, Paul, George and Ringo. However, not one of their first loves lasted. Let's take a look at their successful (and not so successful) relationships to discover the cosmic link between romance and rock.

John and Yoko
While he was married to his first love, Cynthia Lennon, John Lennon met Yoko Ono. This charismatic couple had a good start with Suns in compatible Air signs. John was a multi-talented Libra, born on October 9, 1940. Yoko was born on February 18, 1933. She's an Aquarius, seven years Lennon's senior. The Air-sign emphasis in their bond sparked a mutual sharing of ideas, art and activism. Libra is the artist and peacemaker, which certainly applied to Lennon. And while Ono is also an artist, the main focus for Aquarius is innovation and reform. A compelling manifestation of their signs was their talent in combining art with advocacy, like recording "Give Peace a Chance" while protesting the Vietnam War and "bed-in" war protest of their honeymoon. It was the perfect Aquarius-Libra merger.

What's more, Lennon had Moon in Aquarius, so his emotional nature felt right at home with Ono's Sun, Venus and Saturn in Aquarius. The Venus connection intensified their love and their desire to work together as artists, while Saturn was the karmic link that held them together - even after being separated for 18 months while Lennon was involved with their personal assistant (at Ono's suggestion, unconventional Aquarius that she is!). They reunited, gave birth to Sean Lennon (on John's birthday!) and were married for 11 years until Lennon's murder on December 8, 1980.

Paul and Linda
Another artsy Air-sign couple was Paul and Linda McCartney. He's a Gemini born on June 18, 1942. She was a Libra born on September 24, 1941. While the Beatles' front-man was rocking the world, she was working as a magazine photographer (who later went on to be a musician and animal right's activist). They met in a club in 1967 while she was on an assignment. They married two years later and enjoyed a close relationship and raised four children until her death from breast cancer in 1998.

Their relationship was a mixture of similarities and opposites. While their Suns were in harmony, their Moons sparked an abundance of passion - and some conflict. His Moon in gregarious Leo was magnetized to her Moon and Venus in sultry, secretive Scorpio. But a clash of wills is inevitable between these two fixed signs, which was a challenge in their relationship. On the other hand, his Venus in sensual, practical Taurus, which was opposite her Scorpio placements, helped with sexual and emotional compatibility. And her Jupiter in Gemini, near his Sun and Mercury, heightened their mental compatibility and spiritual bond. Their faith in each other was the foundation of their love.

George and Pattie
How could something that seemed so right, go so terribly wrong? For Pattie Boyd and George Harrison, Neptune dashed any chance they had of a lasting love.

Boyd and Harrison were a Pisces couple. Her birthday is March 17,1944, his was February 25, 1943. Pisces, which is ruled by Neptune, craves a spiritual connection in love. However, being intensely sensitive and idealistic means that Pisces is prone to fantasy, which can lead to disillusionment. It's intriguing to note that Boyd was the source of phenomenal inspiration for two megastar rockers - Harrison and her second husband, Eric Clapton - both of whom wrote numerous #1 hit songs about her (the biggest of which was Clapton's "Layla"). Her ethereal Pisces nature awakened the muse in both men.

Still, Harrison's Sun and Venus in Pisces and Moon in Scorpio were deeply in tune with Boyd's Sun, Mercury and Venus in Pisces. They undoubtedly seemed like the perfect match, at least at first. Unfortunately, it was a love that couldn't withstand the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Did I mention that Neptune also rules deception? Neptune afflictions in both their charts allowed infidelity to creep into their marriage. The couple divorced in 1977 after 11 years of marriage and Clapton's relentless pursuit of the Beatles' wife.

The following year, Harrison married Olivia Trinidad Arias. He'd had enough of Neptuneland and married an Earth sign. Born on May 18, 1948, Arias is a sensual, practical Taurus, a complementary match for the mystical Beatle. They were married for 23 years until Harrison's death from lung cancer in 2001.

Ringo and Barbara
Drummer Ringo Starr met actor Barbara Bach, a former Bond girl, on the set of Caveman in 1980. They have been married since 1981. Like George and Olivia, they have a nurturing Water-Earth connection. He was born on July 7, 1940 with Sun in Cancer and ascendant in Pisces, both Water signs. She was born on August 27, 1947 with Sun, Mercury and Venus in Virgo and Moon in Capricorn, both Earth signs. Ringo swore to always be with her after the couple was in a car accident. He now brings emotional depth and nurturing to their relationship, while she brings sensuality and stability. Actually, with Mars in Cancer, she has a nurturing, home-loving side herself. And having Mars near her husband's Sun is a sexy connection that helps keep their passion alive.

One challenge that can derail a relationship with Pisces and Virgo influences is addiction. Fortunately, Starr and Bach got sober together after a stint in rehab in the late '80s. With such a strong emphasis in Virgo, the sign of healing, service and analysis, it's no surprise that Bach founded the Self Help Addiction Recovery Program and then went on to earn a master's degree in psychology from UCLA. As for Starr, his Moon, Mercury, Mars and Pluto conjunct in Leo says he's a natural entertainer. And he appreciates a strong partner who shares his passion and creativity. Perhaps best of all, he has Virgo on his 7th House of marriage. He couldn't have picked a better partner.

Needless to say, it can be a long and winding road to love. Still, for the Fab Four - and most of us - it's an irresistible journey.
